Lamborghini Aventador J - 2012 Geneva Auto Show

Describing it as "the most uncompromising open super sports car in its entire history, Lamborghini took the wraps off of the stunning Aventador J in Geneva. Although based on the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Coupe, this literal one-off exercise takes the stun factor to a whole new level.

"With the Lamborghini Aventador J, we have molded our brand DNA into its most definitive form to-date. This automobile is as extreme and as uncompromising as only a Lamborghini can be," noted Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. "Nowadays we are confronted with several regulations that we face in the spirit of challenge. The Aventador J is the proof that, despite the rules, Lamborghini will always make people dream, even in the future."

The Lamborghini Aventador J draws its name from the FIA's sporting code, specifically "Appendix J" that covers technical specifications for race cars in various classes. This raging roadster also pays historic homage to the 1970 Lamborghini Jota, which was a super-hot concept variation of the automaker's Miura production model. While carbon-fiber reinforced polymer remains at its superlight core, the Aventador J's structure has been thoroughly reworked to help it cope with the rigors of going topless. That includes the addition a pair of fixed roll hoops behind the seats and a new X-shaped bracing element that frames the mid-ship engine compartment.

In addition to dispensing with the LP700-4's fixed roof and replacing the front glass with a pair of laid-back wind deflectors, the full-composite bodywork on the Aventador J boasts even more dramatic cues. The front clip is dominated by a huge air intake with functional winglets and features a narrower cross section than its coupe cousin accented by a periscope-style rearview mirror. At the rear, an equally massive diffuser balances the front scoop while four huge exhaust outlets, Lambo-signature five-element taillights and a fixed rear spoiler complete the all-function, all-the-time look. Body bits not rendered in bare carbon fiber are painted in a special high-intensity red finish that features a semi-chrome look. Like the LP700-4, the Aventador J also has doors that open upwards, prominent side air intakes and wraps its huge low-profile performance tires around bespoke central-lock wheels that match aluminum with carbon-fiber inserts that act as mini cooling fans for the brakes.
